The Team Edge Maryland Neighborhood History Ellicott City

Victorian House, Historic HomeIn our continuing series on the histories of the Maryland neighborhoods we service, The Team Edge brings you the history of one Marylands oldest and most established communities: Ellicott City.

History

Ellicott City started as Ellicott Mills, a manufacturing and milling town founded in 1777 beside the Patapsco River by the four Ellicott brothers, John, Andrew, Joseph, and Nathaniel. It quickly became one of the largest manufacturing towns in the east and in 1830 this manufacturing led Ellicott Mills to be selected as the first stop of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad outside of Baltimore. Built from granite quarried in Ellicott mills, the station is still standing and is the oldest surviving station in the country. The town was run by the Ellicott family until 1840, when the business enterprises had gotten to be too large for them to support and were mostly sold off. Ellicott Mills became Ellicott City, when a city charter was written in 1867, forming a local government with a mayor and city council.

Ellicott City Now

Ellicott City is known for its Old Town American Charm, so much so that it has been ranked among Money magazines 20 Best Places to Live in the United States four times since 2005. In the 2014 list, Ellicott City shared the sixth place spot with Columbia, and was described as a growing area with a diverse community, excellent schools, and as well placed for a short commute to many good job sites.

Aside from that, there are the aesthetics to consider, one visit to Ellicott City and youll see what makes it an outstanding place to live. The city has a cultured and historical downtown district where many brick and stone buildings still stand. Main Street in downtown Ellicott is a popular destination for tourists and locals seeking authentic Americana. The street is alive with many small entrepreneurial stores, restaurants, and pedestrian foot traffic.

Due to Ellicott Citys well preserved historic nature there are homes from many different eras of American history and in a variety of styles. Between the historic homes and growing new developments a house hunter should be able to find their dream home in an ideal American community.
